@Bob The wife is getting knee pain going downhill she suffers a bit with her knees to start with, anyhow reading up its quite common for walkers to have this problem going downhill,

Ive read up on the correct ways to go downhill and also read about knee supports from my reading knee supports are the way forward combined with good walking practices,

  • Relax and Flow: Your stride will naturally elongate going downhill. This overstriding is bad on the level, but going downhill it helps to brake you a bit while gravity keeps you moving faster than usual. If you find yourself going too fast, shorten and/or slow down your steps and keep it natural.
  • Don't Lean Back: Leaning back will put you off balance, instead stay upright over your hips and knees or lean very slightly forward.
  • Straight Posture or Lean Slightly Forward: Keep your torso upright or lean slightly forward for stability.
  • Bend Your Knees: On steeper slopes, keep your knees slightly bent at all times.
  • Switchbacking: On very steep slopes or those with a loose surface, take a serpentine path by angling across the slope for a few steps left, then a few steps right. This switchbacking is a common trail design to reduce steepness either uphill or downhill.
  • Take Care on Loose Surfaces: Going downhill has a greater risk of slipping on loose gravel or loose dirt. Although you may want to speed through a downhill, you should take caution on natural surfaces.

  • Use Trekking Poles: Research confirms that trekking poles can help take some of the impact off as you go downhill, plus give you a little extra stability. You may have to adjust the length when you start the descent to make your poles longer.
My question is do you are the wife use knee supports and if so what ones do you recommend please.

We don’t wear knee supports but I do carry one in my rucksack when up the Lakes just in case I get a problem.
I wouldn’t go out on steep slopes without my walking pole, definitely takes the strain off the knee when coming down. A lot of people use two but I can get away with one as my left knee is the real dodgy one.
After my last knee op, about ten years ago, my Consultant emphasised the need to keep my quads strong (thigh muscles) and for a lot of years I worked those in the gym on a machine specifically for that and it worked.
I know you won’t have access to one but the stronger the thighs the more strain is taken off the knee.

There are loads of walking poles available, even off Amazon, but get a decent make and they will last years.

Thanks mate ive done a fair bit of reading and you confirm same as everyone else regarding poles would be the best way forward for more than one reason they help loose weight and give good support but the wifes not keen on the idea we are still in the holding hands stage after 37 years lol,

Anyhow as a last resort she will have to get some ive read the ones with springs in would be the way to go,

Ive done a bit of reading on knee braces and some people have success using them her main issue is downhill shes not too bad on the downill road work but i like being out in the countryside plus i am trying to chuck some steep hills at her now shes progressing,

Ive just ordered these and will see how she gets on with them

Thanks Bob i will update the thread when she has tested them out,

We did 71 mile last month that was just on our walks not including our normal daily life, not much for avid walkers but 71 mile more than we usually do.
